What Kind of Bird Is This?

A Grouse?

Back in May, McD and I went on a little vacation.  We were looking forward to seeing a lot of wildlife at Yellowstone, but on our way we stopped at Little Big Horn where Custer had his last stand.  It was really very interesting, and it was where we spotted the first wildlife of our trip.

I really liked the orange on it.

There were several of them, and I could have watched them for hours, but the sun was getting ready set and the park was closing.  We had to go.

So, what kind of bird is it?  I know there are some birdwatchers out there.  Pamela?

    Definitely a prairie chicken!

While very similar to the Greater Prairie-Chicken, I believe this to be an adult Sharp-tailed Grouse. The markings on a prairie-chicken’s breast are more horizontal bars, and the grouse has the dark chevron markings. Sadly, the word on these beautiful birds is that they are fairly common, but declining.
